In my book, Nimrod Twice Born, I trace one of the paths of Gnosticism back to Simon Magus, a magician at the time of Christ. This alternate path of Illuminism arose during the first and second centuries and taught that magical knowledge was the only path to salvation.
What is Gnosticism?
“Experience is better than belief” is an apparently contradictory statement ascribed to Gnosticism. The meaning of Gnosticism comes from the feminine Greek noun for knowledge but applies to a personal, experiential knowledge rather than intellectual. It is the knowledge of the mystery religions received through magic – sexual orgies used as a religious rite was one path of access to the “sacred mysteries”. The full divine power of the Hierophant or priest-king could only be achieved under the sexual anointing of a queen-priestess. Prostitutes were considered the sacred servants of the gods in temple worship and Gnostics experienced the divine through the body of the temple whore. A person who had experienced Gnosis was believed to have achieved godhood.
In the Tarot cards, the Hierophant has his right hand raised in blessing or benediction: two fingers point towards heaven and two towards the earth showing himself to be the “true pontiff”, the builder of a bridge between deity and humanity.
As usual, Freemasonry lies at the heart of this esoteric path. To quote The Occult Theocracy by Edith Starr Miller,
Gnosticism, as the Mother of Freemasonry, has imposed its mark in the very centre of the chief symbol of this association. The most conspicuous emblem which one notices on entering a masonic temple, the one which figures on the seals, on the rituals, everywhere in fact, appears in the middle of the interlaced square and compass, it is the five pointed star framing the letter G. Different explanations of this letter G are given to the initiates. In the lower grades, one is taught that it signifies Geometry. To the brothers frequenting the lodges admitting women as members, it is revealed that the mystic letter means Generation, but the revelation is attended with great secrecy. Finally, to those found worthy to penetrate into the sanctuary of Knights Kadosch, the enigmatic letter becomes the initial of the doctrine of the perfect initiates which is Gnosticism. This explanation is no longer an imaginary fabrication. It is Gnosticism which is the real meaning of the G in the flamboyant star, for, after the grade of Kadosch (a Hebrew word meaning consecrated) the Freemasons dedicate themselves to the glorification of Gnosticism (or anti-christianity) which is defined by Albert Pike as “the soul and marrow of Freemasonry.” 9.( 9. “The G which the Freemasons place in the middle of the flamboyant star signifies Gnosticism and Generation, the most sacred words of the ancient Cabala.
Dan Brown, in his book The Da Vinci Code, was one of those who introduced the path of Gnosticism to the present day reader. We live in a period of amorality and instant gratification and perhaps most importantly, in a day of sexual confusion. In this cross-over world, gnosis becomes a desirable path and there are many earnest seekers. The yin-yang is a symbol of the integration of male/female; of birth, the integration of sperm and egg within the womb. However, it has a higher symbolism which is reflected in the following excerpt from the Hua Hu Jing. This is the cross-over into what we now call the Fifth Dimension.
It is only the third integration which gives birth to something immortal. In this integration, a highly evolved individual joins the subtle inner energies of yin and yang under the light of spiritual understanding. Through the practices of the Integral Way he refines his gross, heavy energy into something ethereal and luminous. This divine light has the capability of penetrating into the mighty ocean of spiritual energy and complete wisdom that is the Tao. The new life created by the final integration is self-aware yet without Ego, capable of inhabiting a body yet not attached to it, and guided by wisdom rather than attachment. Whole and virtuous, it can never die.
The “Flower Children” of the sixties grasped this concept of a higher ethereal goal, yet it was anything but virtuous. It was the era of drugs, sex, and rock ‘n roll. In its attempt to destroy the hypocrisy of the post-war generation, morality was cast aside and it bore bitter fruit. Today’s liberals and New Agers are a broken generation. They are tossed about on a sea with no anchor for their soul. With God and morality out of the picture, they are ripe for a religion of lawlessness and self-gratification, rather than selflessness and wisdom. The “mighty ocean of spiritual energy” has become a seething mass of discontent ready to erupt at any moment. The potion becomes even headier with drugs, Tantric yoga, drumming etc. not to mention the mass sacrifice of the unborn. Gnosis is released more readily through any form of sacrifice and draws the participant to the very edge of Satan worship.
The Biblical Perspective
As with all New Age-related paths, Gnosticism obviously attempts to invert and supplant the Christian faith. It preaches selflessness yet employs all the soft, indulgent pleasures of the soul and ignores the alarm bells of the conscience.
Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. John 8 34-36
Jesus laid it out very clearly. You may think that going the Gnostic route will make you free but, in fact, you become a slave to the enticements and entrapments of this world and the way, which seems right to you now, ultimately leads to destruction (Prov 14:2).
He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 1 John 5 10-12 (Emphasis added)
The Son of God is the only One who has the power to set you free from sin and to offer you eternal life. The Hierophant/Master of this world, when stripped of his Luciferian guise, is Satan. If he has you in his web, there is only one way of escape and that is to call upon Jesus Christ to set you free from sin and death.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6 (Emphasis added)
There is no other opener of the way – no other person on earth who can guide you into truth and everlasting life. Jesus came to give you life, and life abundantly – He is the way!
